Abstract A high resolution seismic stratigraphic study of the western edge of the Malta Plateau (central Mediterranean Sea) was conducted to reconstruct the depositional mechanisms of the shelf-slope system since the end of the Messinian salinity crisis (MSC; 5.3 Ma). The accurate interpretation of a large grid of variable-resolution seismic reflection profiles (multichannel and Sub Bottom) allows us to identify and map a Plio-Quaternary sedimentary sequence overlying the Messinian evaporites. The stratal pattern of this sequence is the result of a clinoform prograding system that constitutes the internal structure of a sedimentary shelf developed in a ramp about 2° slope with bathymetries …
Plio-Quaternary tectonic evolution offshore the Capo Vaticano Promontory

We reconstruct the Plio-Quaternary tectono-stratigraphic evolution in the offshore Capo Vaticano (W Calabria, Italy) by integrating data obtained from single- and multi-channel reflection seismic profiles and a reprocessed version of the CROP M2A/III line. NW-trending, high-angle normal faults, dipping ~70° to the south-west formed along the continental slope connecting the south-west continental shelf of the Capo Vaticano Promontory to the Gioia Tauro Basin (Pepe et al., 2014). Faults generally have small displacements up to 40 m and are sealed by Pleistocene deposits. Calcareous Nannofossil Biostratigraphy and Chronostratigraphy of ODP Hole 964D (eastern Mediterranean Sea)

Quantitative analyses of calcareous nannofossil were carried out on sediments from ODP Hole 964D succession, recovered in the Ionian Sea, Eastern Mediterranean. Results show that the sedimentary sequence, spanning from about 3.5 Ma (Early Pliocene) to the Present, has been investigated through an average sampling resolution of less than 30 kyr. The detailed subdivision into 11 biozones makes it possible to recognize chronostratigraphic the boundaries in the Early Pliocene-Middle Pleistocene interval. Finally, two sedimentary gaps, lasting at least 340 kyr and 120 kyr respectively, have been recognized between the Zanclean and Piacenzian and in the lower part of the Early Pleistocene. SHORT …
